Staying in Hospital

Staying in hospital can be a daunting experience but if you prepare for your visit in advance you will be much more comfortable.

If you are going into hospital for an operation, for 5 days prior to going into hospital for surgery it is advisable to wash with an anti-microbial wash to reduce the risk of infection. Click here for more information.

 

Checklist – to make your stay more comfortable.

Appointment letter. If you need to fast (not eat) check your hospital arrival time and the last time you are allowed to eat and drink. 

Pyjama’s bottoms teamed with a buttoned long nightshirt

Surgical Drain bag

Slippers

Dressing gown

Earplugs – it can get noisy on the ward

Shower gel

Shampoo

Conditioner

Shower cap

Toothbrush

Toothpaste

Make-up

Moisturiser

Snacks

Phone and charger

Book / magazines / colouring book / colouring pencils

Soft loose clothing to come home in

Glasses / contact lenses

Underwear – bra’s, cotton pants (or you may end up with hospital ones!) , socks

Small amount cash /credit / debit card

Pen

Nail file

 Anything else you have specifically been asked to bring by the hospital

The night before your hospital visit

  1. Remove any bracelets / rings / earings / other jewellery.
  2. Leave jewellery, watches and valuables at home
  3. Remove nail varnish on toes and hands
  4. Shower / wash hair with anti-microbial shower gel.
